Boat Shed Cradle Mountain

The Story Behind the Sketch

I have visited Cradle Mountain, Tasmania a few times as I love hiking, and I have always wanted to do the Overland Track. This is the classic scene to photograph, with the boat shed in the foreground and Cradle Mountain in the background.

I already had a few spare frames I had made up for bottle tree sketches, so I decided to use one for a landscape. As you can see, I cropped the image to make it a little more letterbox style.

My Sketch Process

Initial Pencil sketch.

Adding waterproof Ink over the pencil so this will not bleed during the watercolour stage.

Drawing fine details in ink.

More fine details in ink

Even more fine details in ink with various pen widths.

Finished artwork.

Winsor & Newton Waterproof ink wash with a brush, thinned with water to create lighter shades of grey.

This is a black ink workshop I have started teaching at a local high school where I replace the ink wash with Tombow Brush Pens.

Finished artwork.

My paintings are based on my travel experiences. Through this blog, you can discover The Story Behind the Painting, including where and when I captured these wildlife moments, old rustic cars from historical villages, and beautiful seascapes from faraway places.
