Thompson Pass – Chugach Mountains

The Story Behind the Painting

This was the second last day of our Cosmos tour, just before driving down to Valdez. It was good to see the Mountain range up close and I already knew I was going to paint a series of these artworks when I got back home.

I must admit I really enjoyed Alaska and all that it had to offer, from the wildlife to the ever changing scenery out of the bus windows. I’m sure one day I’ll get to go back and collect more reference material for my paintings and sketches.

However I’m not sure if I will find a market for pantings of Alaska in my art gallery in the middle of the Australian outback but we will see. After all people do travel and may want a reminder of where they have been. These international artworks are a conversation starter and people tell me all about the trips that they have been on.

I did create a palette sample for Thompson Pass painting for future reference.

This idea enables me to work on a similar painting later in the year and know what colours to use. I have started doing this for paintings I’m thinking of making into a series or complicated paintings.

My painting come from my own experiences that I have photographed while traveling. By reading this blog, you as a viewer can now hear The Story Behind the Painting. Where, when, what was happening while I was photographing the wildlife.

Enjoy, Chris Osborne
