Last year 2022 I had a lady by the name of Jenny that came to view my little gallery at Possum Park. She took a fancy to the pomegranates on the tree outside the cottage and asked if she could have some, which I said “yes”.
Later that day Jenny came back with a little sketch journal that she made and said it was an exchange for the pomegranates she had taken earlier.
If people mentioned the pomegranate tree I would tell them the story about Jenny and the little sketch journal. Almost a year later I kept seeing this little journal floating around my desk as I kept moving it from draw to draw. Then I thought, what if Jenny comes back and I haven’t used the journal I’ll be in trouble. So one day in February 2023 I decided to draw a tree stump in it.
Dates 17/02/2023 to 01/04/2023
Left – is the hand made journal from Jenny which I love and got me into ink sketching in little journals.
Right – a German Hahnemuehle Journal which has a thicker watercolour paper with a little bit of tooth.
I use Uni pin Fine Line Pens in this A6 Journal.
Some of my 40 sketches are out of order just so I can group them into landscape and portrait images.
Dates 12/04/2023 to Current
I have been photographing tree and stumps for years but since February I’ve been addicted to sketching them. This new study led me to drawing “Bushfire Revival” for the Miles & District Show art competition, which I completed in less than 24 hours so I could meet a competition deadline.
As you can now see the experience I have at drawing little tree stumps which led to me winning first prize in the black and white category, along with another 4 first places for other paintings and the Miles Show grand champion award for my lizard.

My painting come from my own experiences that I have photographed while traveling. By reading this blog, you as a viewer can now hear The Story Behind the Painting. Where, when, what was happening while I was photographing the wildlife.
