Workshops

Join Western Downs artist Chris Osborne in the 2026 New Year to learn painting and sketching skills in an old WWII bunker at Possum Park. This is a great opportunity for self-taught artists to get guidance on materials and creating realistic artworks while enjoying the experience with family and friends.

With a variety of subjects designed to enhance skills and knowledge across different mediums, these workshops are tailored for individuals seeking personal and professional growth. We are continually developing more opportunities to meet the diverse needs of our community. Stay tuned for updates as we finalise additional workshops to offer an even wider range of learning experiences.

Your Instructor

Chris Osborne has been busy over the past 6 years creating almost 400 paintings and sketches for local exhibitions, competitions and shows. He was approached by Mile Historical Village and Museum to create a series of greeting cards and has also been commissioned to paint several bird and pet portraits.

Since he was selected as one of the 10 Western Downs artists he has been asked to create workshops to coincide with his exhibitions. He has also conducted workshops for school and art groups in the Western Downs, Banana Shire Council Areas.

Now he is teaching workshops at Possum Park in an old WWII underground bunker “Brushes in Bunkers”

Don’t forget to ask to see Chris Osborne’s Art Gallery before you leave Possum Park.

List of Workshops

The first hour of a beginner workshop + brush & tone teaches you how to use watercolour brushes & tone. If you have already used watercolour brushes before, then book into an advanced beginner workshop with a II at the end or III (Intermediate)

Black & White Workshops

Brush & Tone Techniques

A 1hr workshop learning watercolour brush techniques and different tonal values on paper. Excellent introduction workshop for people that have not used brushes with watercolour or gouache before. This is the first hour of each beginner workshop so you get used to using brushes.

Brush & Ink Sketching

A 4hr workshop that will cover sketching with waterproof ink on paper. You will be taught line and shading techniques to build up tone in a drawing that will be useful for watercolour & ink workshops.

You will also use brushes with ink to create washes to establish tone and shade that are difficult to achieve with a pen alone.

This is an excellent introduction workshop for people that have not created a sketch with ink pens and ink washes before. Similar to the ink sketching workshop but also with ink washes.

One Point Perspective

This workshop lasts 2 hours and focuses on the basics of one-point perspective as applied to rural and suburban landscapes. It is designed for those who struggle with placing buildings and objects within a street or landscape, making it a suitable course for beginners.

Two Point Perspective

Join a 2-hour workshop to learn the fundamentals of two-point perspective in rural landscapes. This course is ideal for those seeking to improve their sketching skills, especially in understanding spatial elements like placing objects correctly in a scene. Participants will explore examples of two-point perspective, identify vanishing points on the horizon, and learn how to proportionately depict people within their sketches, ensuring a more realistic depiction of depth in landscapes.

Trees & Stumps

A 4hr beginner workshop that will cover sketching with waterproof ink on watercolour paper. If you struggle sketching trees this is the course for you. You will be taught line and shading techniques to build up tone in a drawing that will be useful for watercolour & ink workshops.

Fine Liner & Tombow Techniques

A 4hr workshop learning different pen and Tombow techniques on paper. Excellent introduction workshop for people that have not used Fine Liner waterproof ink pens or tombow dual brush pens before and want to learn a new way to sketch

The aim is to learn how to use fine line and tombow brush pens together to create a better tonal range than just pens alone.

Ink Journaling

A 4hr workshop that will cover sketching with waterproof ink in a small sketch journal. You will be taught line and shading techniques to build up tone in a drawing that will be useful for watercolour & ink workshops.

Black Ink Sketching

A 4hr workshop that will cover sketching with waterproof ink on quality paper. You will be taught line and shading techniques to build up tone in a drawing.

You will be working on a larger drawing with finer details than a quick sketch taught in the ink journaling workshop.

Colour Workshops

Watercolour & Ink

A 4hr workshop learning to sketch simple shapes to build a complex looking structure or landscape.

You will also cover mixing colour with a limited palette, tone work with Tombow brush pens, then we will finish by working in all the details with a selection of waterproof fine liner pens.
This is a very loose style of watercolour painting enhanced with ink work, used for urban sketching but set in a classroom environment with a small group of 6 people.

A watercolour & ink (beginner workshop) includes the 1hr brush & tone techniques so you can explore watercolour and brush work more. The beginner workshop also uses less complicated subjects.

Gouache White Label

A 4hr workshop. Gouache is very similar to watercolour but more forgiving because of the opaque paint. This means that you can build up layers of light and dark colour to create realistic images.

The opaqueness of the paint also means most mistakes can be fixed that happen along the way.

Gouache Black Label

A 4hr workshop. This is definitely one of Osbornes favourite mediums and paper combinations to use. The black paper just makes gouache pop and is quite different from most gouache artworks out there and this is also a favourite choice for collectors of my work.
