Another one from last year’s Alaska trip. This was on our second-to-last day as we crossed over Thompson Pass and down into Valdez. A quick photo opportunity by the mountains and a few other stops at some waterfalls.

Initial sketch.

Stage 1.
I have seen people do an orange undercoat so you can see where to paint over. Never again, because I paint rather thinly and it took me about three coats of white to cover the orange. It’s good to try new techniques and experiment, but this one wasn’t for me.

Stage 2.
Second coat of white.

Stage 3.
Third coat of white, almost covered the orange.

Stage 4.

Stage 4.
I don’t have heating in the studio as it’s an old converted metal train carriage and the sun usually heats it up. How that day I wanted to start painting early and it was only about 5 deg Celsius that warmed up to about 21C after lunch. or 41F to 69.8F in old money.
Anyhow it made it a realistic experience painting snow.

Finished Artwork .
Much more details in the mountains than Thompson Pass acrylic painting.

My paintings are based on my travel experiences. Through this blog, you can discover The Story Behind the Painting, including where and when I captured these wildlife moments, old rustic cars from historical villages, and beautiful seascapes from faraway places.
Enjoy, Chris Osborne
