Blue Domes of Santorini

The Story Behind the Painting

Another escapade with my sister—because who else would tolerate my shenanigans? This time, we island-hopped from Mykonos to Santorini, on a mission to bask in the glory of those iconic blue domes. We joked that their paint shop must only stock blue and off-white; the other colors are probably just a myth needing a special order! Honestly, it was a jaw-dropping sight, exceeding all our wildest Instagram dreams. If only we could have lingered longer, but alas! We had a hot date with a volcano and some delightful hot springs.

My Painting Process

Initial sketch.

I thought painting two similar scenes would speed up the process. Only having to mix paint once and then painting the sky. mix another batch then paint the water. This worked well until I started painting all the buildings. Then It was almost a month per painting.

Stage 1.

Stage 2.

Stage 3.

Stage 4.

Stage 5.

Stage 6.

I have never used so much masking tape as this painting. I wanted all the buildings to have crisp edges that only masking tape could give.

Stage 7.

Stage 8.

Stage 9.

Stage 10.

Finished Artwork.

Well that’s one of the two finished. Only another month to go on the second version. Blog post tomorrow at 5pm.

My paintings are based on my travel experiences. Through this blog, you can discover The Story Behind the Painting, including where and when I captured these wildlife moments, old rustic cars from historical villages, and beautiful seascapes from faraway places.

Enjoy, Chris Osborne
