Peeping Possum

The Story Behind the Painting

One night I was awoken by a loud noise as a possum ran across the roof. I could hear some crunching so I knew it was the possum that had found the bird seed again. Anyway somebody just that day had made a comment that I hadn’t painted any possums and since I has at Possum Park why not. I said that I only paint from my own photo’s and hadn’t taken any suitable photo’s of the possums yet.

So I thought I would not let the opportunity get away this time and put some shoes on and went for a trip outside with my camera. Poor little thing I must have blinded it about 10 times with the flash, but it wasn’t bothered getting stuck into the bird seed.

I must admit I really did enjoy painting the possum and getting back into some of my signature black label paintings was a good change. This was the first black label for the year shortly followed by a black label kookaburra but more on that tomorrow.

Since this artwork was purchased by the Deputy Mayor just before I finished painting it, I added her initials three times. Since the new councillors had just been sworn in, they were touring the region and stayed at Possum Park. So I framed the artwork up over night and then passed it around at breakfast the next day and let the councillors and Mayor have fun trying to find the three sets of initials.

Finished Artwork.

Gouache on Canson Paper

For my Black Label collection I use Winsor & Newton Gouache on Black Colourfix Art Spectrum Paper or Black Mi-Teintes Touch Canson Paper.

My painting come from my own experiences that I have photographed while traveling. By reading this blog, you as a viewer can now hear The Story Behind the Painting. Where, when, what was happening while I was photographing the wildlife.

Enjoy, Chris Osborne
