Watercolour & Ink Workshop

The Story Behind the Workshop

I was asked if I could teach a workshop to run alongside my exhibition at Gallery 107 Dalby, and since this is something I enjoy, of course I said yes.

Now this got me thinking what should I teach, since I had already taught a gouache workshop in Miles, I wanted to teach something new. More than half of my exhibition was in watercolour so I thought this would be a good subject to teach.

So I spent the next week working on lesson plans, handout and methods of teaching watercolour that would not be too complicated for a beginner class. I hopefully achieved this and helped a few students with perspective too.

My Sketching and Painting Process

The gallery had an area set aside for the local pottery group so we managed to re arrange a few tables so I could set up my gear.

Since we didn’t have a projector I brought my TV and video camera so I could create a live demonstration. I also setup my laptop so I could show example of what we would be working on.

This is the view the students had of the TV and my work area.

This was my work area a the view of the students I had. (all busy at work)

I had three workshops that ran for 4hrs and all students seemed very happy and created some excellent work.

I gave the students an option of four subject to draw and the first group chose “Coopers Cottage at Lightning Ridge”

The second group of students chose the tree and stone wall I photographed while visiting England back in 2000.

The Final group of students chose the tug boat that I photographed while at Hervey Bay.

Because I was teaching my watercolours were far from complete at the end of the workshop, so I spent about another hour on each artwork the day after I got home.

Conclusion

I think everyone had a wonderful time and the students were asking when I would teach another class, which will probably be sooner than they think. Since I have to dismount my exhibition after 6 weeks run, I thought I would do a final artist talk and a short 2hr workshop on the final day of my exhibition 18th April.

I didn’t realise that some people hadn’t held a paint brush before so I’m going to create another workshop on brush & tone techniques that future students can complete prior to the next watercolour & ink workshops.

I also spent sometime updating my website to include all the brands of the materials that we used in class and I’m still working on some more downloads.

Material we used

Watercolour Paint, Ink & Paper

I use Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour on Arches France Watercolour Paper, 300g Hot Pressed or Fabriano Artistico Watercolour Paper 300g Hot Pressed..

Future Workshops

I have so many ideas running around in my head after this workshop that will help budding artists in different mediums and techniques. Brush & tone Techniques, Fine Liner & Tombow Techniques, watercolour & Ink, Perspective, sketching, journaling, and gouache black label workshops.

I’m also currently working on a few different teaching locations from Miles to Toowoomba. So if you want more information subscribe to my website or save this link on my Workshops and keep looking back for more updates.
