Welcome Sight Refuge Orisson

The Story Behind the Urban Sketching

In 2014 I walked the Camino with my mother and this was one of our first stops, to get a hot chocolate and some cake. There was so much fog we didn’t get to see any of the stunning Pyrenees scenery which was a little disappointing on our first day hiking.

If you look closely you can see my mother putting on her rain jacket just in front of the windows and my backpack propped up against the wall.

This was one of the most strenuous and longest days on the camino from memory it was about 27km.

My Sketching and Painting Process

Initial Pencil sketch.

Adding waterproof Ink over the pencil so this will not bleed during the watercolour stage.

Erasing Pencil marks.

Watercolour added loosely just for some basic colour.

Tombo brush pens added for toning and shadows.

Starting ink work on the stones.

Drawing in all the fine details in ink and adding a little more watercolour.

Watercolour Paint, Ink & Paper

I use Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour on Arches France Watercolour Paper, 300g Hot Pressed or Fabriano Artistico Watercolour Paper 300g Hot Pressed..

Tombo Brush Pens N15, N45, N55, N60, N65, N95 and Faber Castell Fine-liners 0.05, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7
