Miles Historical Village Workshops 2026

I want to extend a big thank you to everyone who showed up for my watercolour and ink workshop at the Miles Historical Village 55th Anniversary day.

Chris Osborne guided you through sketching and painting buildings on location at the village.
He covered the basics of perspective, sketching simple shapes to build a complex looking structure or streetscapes.

Colour mixing with a limited palette was explained along with tone work with a selection of Tombow brush pens. Then we finish by working in all the details with a selection of fine liner pens.
This is a very loose style of watercolour painting enhanced with ink work, used for urban sketching but set in a classroom environment with a small group of up to ten people.

The aim is to loosen up, have fun flicking paint and letting your pens dance around quality watercolour paper and having an artwork you will be proud to hang in your home.

Morning Workshop 9am to 12pm

Osborne has expertly crafted a dynamic watercolour & ink workshop, offering a few select subjects from the Miles Historical Village. Take a moment to explore some of his original artworks that serve as the foundation of this engaging workshop.

A reference photo will be given to work from at the workshop or an image supplied below to download to your own iPad.

Afternoon Workshop 1pm to 4pm

The workshop is set out over 3 hours with short 15mins break after 1.5 hours, this should be plenty of time for students to complete a few simple exercises and their main artwork. Also a few demonstrations by the instructor.

Materials Used

This is a list of materials that were used in the watercolour workshops at Miles Historical Village

Paper

  • A4 Photo copy paper (quick skeches)
  • Fabriano Watercolour Paper hot pressed 300g (Main painting & wet on dry techniques)

Materials

  • A3 Clipboard, Card, Mat (Tape paper to)
  • Frog Tape (local hardware shop)
  • Pencils, Faber Castell, Mont Marty (4B, 6B)
  • Kneadable Eraser – Lyra or Faber Castell
  • Artist Watercolour palette (yours to take home with paint)
  • Brushes – small round, rigger, angled, Stippling, Flat
  • Water Container – old Ice cream container (Choc mint, vanilla or toffee!)
  • Water Mister – Xpress it
  • Kitchen Towel or Tissue
  • A4 LED Light Pad Anko – Kmart
